I will be entering a 5-year doctoral program this fall to study Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences. My long term goal = researching and resolving health disparities among minorities (i.e. hyptertension, diabetes, sickle cell anemia, etc.). In addition to the Mcknight Doctoral Fellowship, I recently learned that I was nominated for the National Science Foundation Bridge to the Doctorate Award and I received it! I feel truly blessed and highly favored that money will not be an issue for me while I’m in school (it will be tough enough as it is). I will be moving to attend the university in a little over 1 month. Unfortunately, I am still in the process of finding a place to live once I get there, so I’ve been very busy as you can imagine. I had also wanted to use this blog to capture journey to attaining my Ph.D., so there will be plenty of updates.

The good news is that I left feeling more prepared for graduate school in the fall. I was very fortunate to have state political official, university deans, and others take the time out of their busy schedules to help students like myself learn how to navigate the Ph.D. process. I’ll be sure to discuss the actual fellowship in another post…. The bad news is that I did not receive a computer, so I’m back at the drawing board.

I’m finally getting around to shopping for a new computer. The old one has got to go because it is definitely impeding my progress. Honestly though, I have been trying to hold off on this purchase because I don’t really have the funds for it right now. In addition, I have been awarded a McKnight Doctoral Fellowship to attend graduate school starting this fall. So there is a chance that I may be surprised with a new computer to go along with the fellowship (this happened to me a few years ago as a McNair Scholar during undergrad, but unfortunately I damaged the computer). I won’t find out about the possible surprise computer until I attend orientation for the fellowship program which is about a week away. In the meantime, I’m stuck hightailing it to the library or suffering with my time sucking, extra slow computer at home.
