As you may know from reading my previous posts, the cost of maintaining my sisterlocks is overwhelming for me as a grad student. When I had originally saved up and invested a couple hundred dollars to have my sisterlocks installed for the first time, I had no idea that I would have to continuously shell out the amount of money every month that it takes to maintain them. They say sisterlocks is freedom for our hair? Definitely not freedom from the chokehold of the salon! The worst part of it is that I cannot just forgo getting my hair retightened or space them out further, because as you saw in a previous post, it still ends up biting me in the butt. I really believe that as a black woman with natural hair, I am taken advantage of in many ways. Case in point, about a year ago I wanted a simple wash and roller set with my locs. I went into a random salon in the hood and they wanted to charge me $75 vs. $40 that they would charge someone with the creamy crack. Now keep in mind that they weren’t doing any retightening or anything, just simply washing and setting my hair on rollers. I would think that my hair would be less time consuming since there’s at the VERY LEAST no comb/parting necessary. GEEEEZZ! Am I the only person in the world that thinks that was absurd?

Back to the sisterlock retights. So transporting every month to Johadeni Nappi has been taking its toll on me and it’s about time to make a change. I had already made up my mind to pay the $250 to have the master trainer teach me how to retighten my own hair. However, I recently had renewed hope in finding someone up here in Gainesville to do them for me. One of my professors actually has a daughter who is a sisterlock trainee. Thinking that a sista might get a break on the pocketbook and a convenient alternative to travelling over 100 miles to Johadeni Nappi each month, I was excited to call her. However, to my disappointment, she charges MORE $$$ than the certified consultants at Johadeni Nappi! There was also another woman in Gainesville who isn’t even trained in the SL method but swore up and down that she could use interlocking to retighten my hair each month for the great price of over $200. Do I look like a frigging idiot???

Ok, I’m sick of all this consultant biz. One of the main reasons that I went natural in the first place was to reclaim the freedom to style my own hair without the requirement of a stylists’ services at least once a month. I do wish I would’ve discovered NappyLocs before I even got the SLs but that’s a whole entire post on its own. The NappyLocs would’ve started me out as a DIYer (Do It Yourself) from the beginning. I’ll get it together one day….soon…..

For those who want a more detailed explanation of how I put the PCs in and took them out, continue reading….

I sectioned off 6 parts of my head first and took on 1 section at a time. I started off using 3 locs/1 pipecleaner, but after doing that I noticed they looked too small so I increased it to ~5 locs/2 pipecleaner for each “wrap”. I actually cut my pipecleaners in half and then folded the tip before applying to my hair for safety. If I was to do it again, I wouldn’t worry about cutting them and just fold them in half. I slept in them for 2 nights and it was ok for me, definitely more comfortable than sleeping with Bantu Knots if you ever had those. Although I was trying to wait until Christmas to show my folks my new do, I decided to take them down on the 3rd day (which was yesterday) because they started to become a nuisance. Also, I was anxious to see what my curls look like.

It was soooo easy for me to take out, I think mainly because I was cautious of how putting them in would affect taking them out. With the way I put them in, all I had to do was 1) unbend the top part of the pipecleaner closest to my root, 2) unbend the bottom part of the pipe cleaner at the tip, 3) hold the hair at my root while pulling the pipecleaner up and out. Only 2 out of my whole head gave me problems with some snagging and that’s because the bottom close to the tip was raveled in with the pipecleaner. I’ve been SL’d for over 1 year and my hair is not nearly what anyone would call mature so with my soft hair, I knew some snagging was bound to occur, but again, I planned for it very well. Altogether, I think it took me over 2 hours, but I’m not quite sure about the timing because I wasn’t really watching the clock. All know is that I got home form purchasing the rods, put my ACV rinse together, washed/rinsed my hair, got to work on wrapping the SLs, then I went to the club with my bf rocking the new look!

Overall, I like the look it gave, but I don’t see myself doing this very often because of how much time is involved.

UPDATES ON THIS POST HERE!

It’s been a while, a looong while. So much has been happening over the past few months. I’m not sure if I’ll do a huge review post, but while I have the time, I did want to show off my latest hair style. Two weeks ago I shelled out $255, yes $255 for my last retight and had wrap-a-loc done on my sisterlocs. Why was it so much $$$$? Well, I have missed 2 retights, so they charged me double the usual amount for that = $170 + $10 (wash) + $75 (wrap-a-loc). To tell you that I walked out of there pissed off was an understatement. My hair was NOT all of that and to top it off the curls did not even last. I am beyond over going to my consultant for these retights spending all that money. I am determined to take the retight class and do this ish on my own starting in January. Anywho, since I love wearing my hair curly, I went on a net surfing rampage to find a DIY method. I like the look Bantu Knots give, but they don’t always turn out like I want. To make a long story short, I found out that many women with locs set them using pipe cleaners. Upon closer inspection, the pipe cleaners look VERY similar to the wrap-a-loc tools. The nerve some people have to “develop” something “new” and sell it for bookoo money! I purchased 100 black pipe cleaners from Michaels for $4.00 vs paying probably $80 or more for enough wrap-a-loc tools. Oh, and the $75 I paid my consultant did not come with the tools; they removed them prior to letting me leave of course. So, I washed my hair and rinsed it with Apple Cider Vinegar (I’ll do a post on that later). I set my hair with Lottabody and got to work. I did not sit under the drier because I did not plan to remove the tools right away. The great thing about this method is that while you’re waiting for your curls to set, you have a hairstyle within itself. It turned out way cute and I even went out on the town lastnight just like this. Here’s how it turned out!

God has blessed me to live another year and today I am celebrating another birthday! I am turning 21 again

For the past two weeks, I’ve been traveling and trying to keep up with the school gig. Last weekend I attended the Florida Education Fund’s “2008 McKnight Doctoral Annual Fellows Meeting” in Tampa, FL. At the meeting, I had the pleasure of interacting with dozens of African American scholars who shared their experiences of the graduate education process. One of the specific aims of the conference was to address issues pertinent to the needs of matriculating graduate students. With several panel discussions and workshops, I can honestly say that many of my needs were definitely addressed. I also had the opportunity to sit down and speak with the president regarding my shortcomings in school thus far. He listened very attentively and was able to hook me up with someone who is where I want to be in 8-10 years; a female who had successfully been through the process in my field!

The other meeting I attended was actually a trial hearing which was held yesterday by an organization that I joined almost half a decade ago. I had been waiting for that day to come for over a year. I traveled to South Carolina and back home to Florida within the same day because I couldn’t afford to stay at a hotel. Many of the unanswered questions that I have had for well over a year were answered and I am glad that I could put part of my mind at rest. Unfortunately though, I don’t believe the outcome of the trial will be in my favor. Because of that, I am in a very somber mood on my birthday. I keep replaying yesterday over and over in my mind and I keep wondering what else I could’ve said to get my point across. There was a very complex issue at stake and it seemed impossible to be able to successfully prove my case. My memory had failed me. This experience has made me think about the numerous individuals who may be in prison or even death row for crimes that they did not committ. In any event, I learned to be more aware and cautious of the people that I choose to associate with in my life and to be more obedient to the warnings/words of the wise instead of trying to understand their logic and reasoning. At this point, I am not sure what to make of my membership in this organization. A part of me wants to just close that chapter of my life because I cannot name anything positive that has come out of it since I joined. Yet, another part of me wants to hold out because what I experienced could just be one big isolated mess and if I continue, I will eventually have the privilege to see the “greener” side.

Decisions, decisions. I am sooo wishing I had listened to my parents when they told me to enjoy being a child and not to be in a rush to grow up. Being a grownup sucks!

As of this week, I have been a PhD student for 5 weeks and it has NOT been easy. This semester, I am taking a core course which provides exposure to fundamentals of all of the disciplines represented by six advanced programs that the College of Medicine offers (Structural Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Cell Biology/Cystoskeleton, Cell Biology/Transport, and Signal Transduction). So far I’ve completed the Structural Biology module of the course and the exam was last Monday. I actually received my test results a few hours ago and I did poorly (not the lowest in the class, but I could’ve done a lot better). I’m not feeling too down about my test because I know what I did wrong and I did not study as much as I should’ve. Additionally, I was under an immense amount of stress worrying about money and how I was going to eat everyday and how my bills were going to get paid. I had gone more than a month living here with no income! It’s very sad that there were no reliable resources to assist me (and others in the same situation). I finally received my first check Sept 12 and it was missing nearly a week of pay because of “technical errors”, but I was happy to receive it nontheless. My next exam is October 6, so I am definitely going to try to work more diligently to ensure that I understand all of the concepts. Hopefully, I’ll find a reliable person(s) to study with.

I just came back from the gym and I am so proud of myself because that was my second workout this week! Yesterday I went to this cycling class and I thought it would be a breeze but it was surely intense to say the least. The instructor had us standing up on the bikes and stuff…I could barely keep up, lol. Today I decided to try a stepping class. That class was a little less intense but my feet were giving me hell. I need to get it together! I decided that I will keep going to different group fitness activities at school until I find one that is at my level (over time I will step it up a few notches). I think I might give swimming a shot next week. To help keep me motivated, I’ve joined The 50 Million Pound Challenge. I’m not looking forward to it, but I definitely need to purchase a scale to keep track of my progress of losing my goal of 24 lbs. I think I’m off to a good start!

I guess this week I’m realizing some things that I need to work on. Weight has never really been an issue for me. I was always a very skinny girl. Friends and family would joke around and tell me things like, “girl you need to get some meat on your bones!” No, I didn’t like how skinny I was,but there wasn’t anything to do about it. I ate anything and everything I wanted and still didn’t gain any weight. I would look at other girls and (black) women on TV (read: video vixens) and wish I could be as voluptuous as they were. Well, about 2 years ago, my wish started coming true. After taking Ortho Tri-Cyclen to treat my acne, my weight slowly started to increase. I went from a steady 115 to ~125. Then within ~1 year, I gained approximately 30 pounds! Some idiots that I hadn’t seen in a while even asked me if I was preggers! Right now I am 5’5″, 174 lbs and my measurements are 42-35-45. I like to give my measurements because I don’t believe my weight alone does me any justice. I do have the fab curvy figure that I’ve always wanted and I am (excuse my ghetto slang, but I am from Dade county so it’s bound to come out) definitely “supa thick”. I have no cellulite, no stretch marks, my girls sit up nice & proper, and the only thing that jiggles on me is my backside. BUT I would like to TONE up on some areas (mostly the middle section). When I want to really look glam I wear a corset to pull me in, but I would like a natural solution. Most importantly, I don’t need to gain ANYMORE weight!!

I went to the doctor the other day and he recommended that I lose ~25 lbs. Seems fair enough. My solution is to get active first, and then I’ll work to incorporate eating healthier. Right now, I am the MOST inactive person imaginable. My chest and legs hurt just from a brisk <10 minute walk. I used to have a gym membership, but I barely ever went. It was all so intimidating! These super thin women would come in looking all fab and just get to work doing their thing, but I didn’t know what the heck to do! For the most part I would spend a few hours on the treadmill and call it a day/week/month, lol. Anywho, I’ve located some group fitness classes at school that I could squeeze into my schedule. I’ve had them on my calendar for a few weeks now and only managed to go to 1 class, but I’m sure I’ll get into the routine as soon as I get used to juggling my schoolwork.

This is me last month….

Since about the 5th grade I have been experiencing problems with my skin, specifically ACNE. I absolutely hate it! I am so fed up at this point because all this time everyone has been telling me that I would grow out of it. Well, I am 22 years old and there are no signs of me growing out of it. During my teenage years my mother shuttled me in and out of dermatologist offices and I’ve tried everything from Accutane to Proactiv to Doxycline to Retin-A, Ortho Tri-Cyclen and countless others. NONE of it (with the exception of Accutane worked). I stopped taking Accutane, however, due to side effects and $$$. For the past 2-3 years I gave up on treating my acne and just let it do its thing. The most I do is put a full, very uncomfortable face of makeup on everyday. There were some points of time where I felt confident enough to not wear any makeup, but those days are few and far between. So far, the only pattern I’ve figured out is that my skin breaks out the most around the time my monthly comes on. Sometimes I get fooled that my skin is getting better and that it’s finally clearing up for good…but then the hormones always sneak up on me and cut me down to size.

Lately, since I’ve been back in school I’ve been more conscious of my skin again and I’d like to give treating it another shot. There’s this black skin care institute in D.C. that I heard about a while ago that I would love to go to, but I cannot find any information about it online for the life of me. In the meanwhile, I made an appointment to see a dermatologist 9/26. Besides the acne itself, I have a lot of hyperpigmentation to deal with (I think that’s actually a bigger problem than the acne itself). I’m very optimistic about my visit next week and I’ll definitely keep you updated!

Unbelievably, I have only been in school for 3 weeks — it feels like it’s been a couple of months! Right about now I’m starting to regret the ~1.5 year break I took after receiving my undergraduate degree. I would have been waaaay better off if I had not done that because I am having THE hardest time getting back into the groove of school. At the job I was working at before I started the PhD program, I pretty much knew the ends and outs of what I needed to do on a daily basis. When it was time for me to go home, I went home and didn’t have to even think about the job again until the next workday. Usually, I was so tired when I got home that I would take a nice long nap and then wake up and casually watch TV or surf the net or even read some good fiction. But with school, I have to actually study in my free time. What-a-bummer. And mind you, I’m spending about the same amount of time I would in a full-time job in the classroom (8:30am – 5pm), so when I get home guess what? I am tired just like I have always been. And is some biochemistry book supposed to keep me up? lol! No, it hardly does. Maybe I’m just being lazy??? So I end up waking up ~12-3am after I’m rested (I woke up at 4:30am a few mintues ago) and doing what I can before the day starts. I know that it’s not very efficient at all, but I didn’t even have a chance to ease into this. It was just like BAM!

So I was just talking with one of my good friends Glamorous online. There was this chick we went to college with who was always on this nappturality ish. She wore a weave for the majority of the time (the weave looked like semi-kinky natural hair). I personally had always thought she was natural underneath, but I guess we will never know. Well I was browsing through ‘the book‘ as I occasionally do and saw that she decided to get a relaxer. Yeah, I was a little taken aback by it. I showed it to Glam and here’s how the conversation went:

Glam: … it looked nice

Me: No it doesn’t. What’s nice about fried and laid to the side??? lol

Glam: I like relaxed hair but like I said abt the cell phone companies earlier & I will repeat abt hair….DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS, u ain’t got to like it or agree.

Me: I personally don’t give a **** because who’s gonna be able to get the 99.5% of black women who alter their hair to change anything?

Ok, I lied. I actually do care, but I also realize that there’s nothing I can do about it. She’s right, there are different strokes for different folks. About the cell phone companies….we also had a mini-argument earlier (it’s a waste of time trying to debate/argue with Glam) about T-mobile. We both have T-mobile (I’ve had it for ~6 years and she’s had it for 1 year) and she always complains and talks about how crappy the service is and on and on. So I had to step up for T-mobile, lol. Ok, so about this hair thing, it just really bothers me deep down in my soul that my fellow sistahs out there largely feel the need to alter the beautiful, natural crown of hair that the Lord has given them. So many complain about how unmanageable their hair is without Creamy Crack to the rescue. We sure managed before we made that long journey overseas and got a peak at that European beauty didn’t we? The chicks that really get on my nerves are the ones that wear relaxers and then complain that their hair is not growing or their hair is too thin. There are several commercials out there advertising products to remedy those issues. And I’m screaming at the TV, stop using the Creamy Crack idiots!!!!

Week of 07/28/2008

8/01 – Love or What? (No Audio)

Good morning everyone. I am a 23 year old single parent and graduate student. When my daughter’s father and I met we appearead to really be into eachother and eventually thought we were in love; it turned out we were just in lust. He was not really present during my pregnancy and was not present during my daughters birth and hardly ever seen her after she was born. He was quite disrespectful for some time and got someone else pregnant just before I gave birth. I never found out about this older woman (with several children of her own) until his mother decided to tell me about it three months after I had my daughter. The woman knew all about me and was very childish and disrespectful to me. My daughter’s father and I were not on speaking terms after I found out about the other woman and he was incarcerated shortly before my daughter’s first birthday. So much went on during the time leading up to this and I believe that I was so depressed that my hair began to fall out. Within the last year or so I have allowed him to call my house (and he has called very often) but he has recently started started stating how much he “loves” me and wants to be with me. He admits that he has done some things wrong and has apoligized for it but I have not completely gotten over it so he tries to blame me for our arguments over the phone. I work extremely hard, obtaining a Master’s and working a 40+ job to pay for my daughter’s private school education and I still feel some resentment towards him for his behavior. I am working on forgiveness (for my own peace of mind, not his) but I haven’t completely begun to forgive because I believe that I am still in love with him. If he gets out of jail any time soon I believe that i may end up going back to him. Would I be wrong? Thank you so much for reading my letter, and for answering it if you can. P.S. He does not even have a high school diploma but he claims to have all these ideas going for him once he gets out.

7/31 – I Need an Out (No Audio)

Hi everyone, I’m 28yrs old mother of a 5 yr old boy. I’ve been in a relationship for 4 1/2 years. My son only knows my current “boyfriend” as daddy. He’s a good provider for the both of us however, he’s emotionally and mentally abusive to me. He tears me down with his words and never tries to build me up with love. I feel he’s an alcoholic of course he doesn’t. He tells me I need to find that guy that’s going to be all I need cause he ain’t the one. When we first got together I was 160 lbs and over the years I gained about 20lbs. That put me at an uncomfortable 185lbs and a size 11/12.Then I was too BIG. He cheated on me so much that he got comfortable enough to call one of he chicks during one of our intimate moments. Of course he was drunk. So I lost weight. I’m at 165lbs and a size 7-8. I cook 4-5 days out the week. He finds a problem with that. The way I dress… that’s a problem. I get complements from men and women on how I dress all the time. Then my hair… I have somewhat long hair. When I wear it wrapped, he complains its not done. From time to time I’ll wear a weave and my beautician hooks me up, but then that’s a problem. No matter what, I’m a problem. We don’t go out together but he’ll give me money to go out alone. I’ve never cheated on him even though I have the time, opportunity, and reason. Men tell me I’m beautiful all the time. I don’t feel it because he says “you’re a good girl, they only want to sleep with you.” Then he’ll tell me to go be with them. I’m like if you don’t want me, let me go so I’ll be able to give the next man a fair chance. Oh yeah he don’t even clean up when he’s home all day. I love him, but I’m NOT in love with him anymore. I cry all the time. All he says is “Suck it up”. He calls me bad names then when he’s sober he won’t apologize all he’ll say is you shouldn’t have made me mad. What did I do? Nothing but be here for him 100%. There really is too much for me to put in this letter. I want to leave him but financially I can’t right now. Mr. Steve (Code Cracker), please help. Your morning show is my therapy. I can’t afford a real therapist which I really do need. I’m crying as I pick and choose what to expose on this letter. I talk to GOD so much people think I’m crazy talking to myself. I can’t talk to my family or friends because I’ve cried so much to them. PLEASE HELP ME. Loving The Wrong Man

7/30 – Did I do the Right Thing By Stepping Away? (No Audio)

Good Morning Ms Shirley, I was in a relationship with this young man(43) for about 2mths ok, We met here in St. Petersburg, Fl back in Nov. of 07, but he originally lives in LA & I live here in Fl so basically it is a long distance relationship. Now from the beginning we stayed in contact with each other, we were able to reach each other either by cell or home phone pretty much at any given time. He then came back to Fl to spend a week with me in Dec. Now for the whole month of Jan it has become very difficult to reach him now by either phone when before I was able to. So I’m basically playing phone tags with him. So I pretty much asked him what was going on, because I had began to feel a change/difference in his behavior. Now it has now gotten to the point where when we do talk, we are not on the phone for no more than 5 or 10 mins before him up & say OH! wait a min, or hold on a min & never clicks back over, I would go on waiting until I hear the dial tone just to see it he would click back over, or he would say let me call u back & never does. This has been going on now for a while. It has now gotten to the point to where I can’t never seem to get a hold of him, ok but now this is what he says: He states that when he put his cell phone on the charger, it automatically shuts off & if someone calls it automatically goes to his voice mail. But for some odd reason I have a hard time getting him on the phone, but everyone else can get through with no problem. So I have gotten to point to where I am fed up with this. I feel in my heart that there may be someone else in the picture & he’s not saying, I say this because his behavior has changed. I’ve told him how that bothers me & it’s just like I haven’t said a word. I often express to him how I feel. We can’t & don’t really hold a conversation any more like we used to. So I made up in my mind to call him & left him a message letting him know that I was sick & tired of playing the phone game with him, & that I was going to stop calling him. I also told him that if he is seeing or talking to someone else then that’s just the way it is, I was not going to worry or stress myself out about what he’s doing up there. If he can’t talk to me about the change in his behavior & he rather continue on like this then he can do it without me. I also told him several times before that if I’m not the woman that he wants to be with & be committed to then he needs to let me know now before I get into any deeper than I already am. But I decided to go ahead & let it go because I don’t want to be with no one that don’t want to be with me. Y love someone who doesn’t really love u back. There is no conversation between us anymore, so that lets me know something. I believe in my heart that I did the right thing by walking away. But I would like to have another opinion besides my own. He won’t talk to me about too much of nothing that I ask, he is too secretive for me. Please give u guys feedback. DID I DO THE RIGHT THING BY pulling myself AWAY from this situation? Ms Bradenton, Fl.

7/29 – Worrying (No Audio)

Dear Shirley and Steve: I met this guy in October 2007. He seems to be very nice, is respectful, cute, and sexy, just the “Mr. Right.” Now…he is on disability because he sustained a neck/spine injury and is unable to work full-time (he walks with a cane because the left side of his body is kind of weak) but this is okay with me because I don’t judge him, I like him just as he is. With the help of his sons, he does a little automobile detailing at his own schedule, and he works with his church, videotaping functions, special church affairs, and also events/programs in our area that is broadcast on our town’s cable channel (we live in a rural area) He is married but separated and has been for awhile and says that he is working on a divorce. When I met him, he was living with his parents, but he has just recently moved and I haven’t been to his home yet. My concern is: He only comes and visits me on Sundays, and I can hardly ever reach him on his cellular phone (he says he does not have a home phone, because he is trying to cut expenses). He does calls me on some Saturday evenings if he wants to come over on Sunday. He says that he doesn’t want to come and see me during the week, because he respects the fact that I work and he does not want to interfere with my beauty rest. Because we live in a rural area, the cellphone connection does not work sometimes. He also claims that he wants to save his minutes during the day, and although he gets free minutes at 7:00 pm, at by that time he is home and phone is cut-off (likely no service anyway). He says that he doesn’t want to call me at work, out of respect. I asked him why does he only come and see me on Sundays and not Saturdays? He claims that he details cars on Saturdays. I sense that there is something wrong going on here – I do not feel that he is detailing cars EVERY Saturday, especially when he says that he works on his own schedule, and what if the weather is bad, he sure ain’t detailing then. Also, when I try to call him, his voice mail always comes on (he says that he listens to my messages). I don’t like it that I can’t ever talk to him on the telephone and he only visits on Sundays. Do you think that something shady is going on here? I’ve asked him is he seeing another woman, and he says “no.”

7/28 – Momma’s Boy (No Audio)

Hello morning crew, first of all let me start by saying I’ve been with this guy for nine years and not married. He’s really a momma’s boy. He’s 37 years old. Every time we fuss or get into an argument he calls his momma. She can’t hold water on her tongue. Then before you know it our business is all in the streets. He tells his momma everything that’s going on in our relationship. I’m wondering if he tells her what goes on in our bedroom. Do you all think he is sleeping with his momma? Because ain’t no mother and son should be that close. One time he cheated and I found out of course he called his momma. Then she has the nerve to call me and defend him. I think whatever goes on between a man and a woman should stay between that man and that woman. I’ve asked him several times to keep his momma out of our business. He didn’t tell her so I called her myself and I went off on her. His momma thinks I should take anything and everything he issues. Just because she stayed with his daddy for thirty years putting up with the same B.S., she expects me to do the same. I need help what should I do? DO you think I was wrong for going off on his momma? Signed HELP DOWN IN THE DIRTY SOUTH! LOUISIANA.

I wouldn’t say that it is a vacation exactly, because I have been consumed with work. What I would say is that it is the first time that I could devote 100% of my time to Ciabranel D.A.T.A. (it probably will be the last though since school is starting mid-August–hopefully by that point, everything will be running like a well oiled machine, and all the legal kinks have been worked out).

Since my expertise in computer programming/database design/web design was all pretty much self taught, I have started some online tutorials to get some official training. I am very proud of myself that I was able to learn many complicated processes on my own! After I finish these series of tutorials, I will seek certification from an educational institution…but I’m not quite there yet. There are other pressing items that I am dealing with right now, namely the move that I’m preparing to make. I should be back in Tampa, FL on 08/01, at which point I have 1 week to pack all of my things. I also have a meeting with a potential client next week as well, so I am preparing documentation for that meeting. All in all, all is well!

I did it on dry hair and did not use two strand twists; instead, I simply twisted the hair on itself using a swirling motion with my fingers. I also did not use any products (i.e. setting lotion). Furthermore, I let my hair air dry instead of sitting underneath a hair dryer. As you can see from the 1st set of Bantu Knot photos, the hair turne dout ok, but the curls weren’t as tight as I like them. Also, by the end of the day, you could not tell that I had even styled my hair at all.
The next day, I discovered the video below on the net, “How-to-Do a Wet Set Without Using Roller”. I’m so glad that I found it because it taught me what I was doing wrong (thanks Natural Southern Girl!). I used Motions Light Styling Foam and spritzed very lightly with Motions Light Hold Working Spritz once all the knots were in…. Finally, I can get the curls that I won’t without breaking the bank buying wrap-a-loc or Soft Spikes!

Good morning Strawberry letter 23, I am a 41 year old single parent of one young adult daughter (18) and a teenage son (16). My kids are the product of 12 year marriage. Last week my daughter told me she was 7 weeks pregnant... mind you she is still in high school and she does not graduate until June 2008. Since the kids have been little I have talked about the importance of an education (especially when I work for the school system) and some stability before starting a family. It is almost like someone has brain-washed my child into the notion that she is ready to take on the responsibility of a mother. I am just devastated and shocked that she wants to keep this baby. She cries and gets depressed when I bring up the options of adoption or terminating this pregnancy. I am overwhelmed with sadness because all the plans she had for college and enjoying her young life (without children) will be challenged. Also I must admit that I am embarrassed to tell my family and friends. I know she's 18. But with no job, no education and living at home still...this is not a pretty picture. Now don't think for one minute that I won't still provide and support her through this it's just a very hard pill to swallow right now. How do I accept this? How do I help her stay on track with her plans with baby in toe? Thank you, Grandma to be

I have been working TIRELESSLY to put the final touches on my first product for a researcher at the institution where I’m currently working. This project really started January of this year, so the total development time was ~7 months. My next project should not take nearly as much time as this one did because a) I know exactly what I’m doing now and b) I will sit down with each customer to discuss a “blueprint” of what they need up front (so that I can configure everything from the beginning, rather than having to go back in and change things around to fit something new in). Though this job is a freebie, I’m still grateful for the opportunity to learn more and more each day. Some snapshots of what I’ve recently created and added to the current project are below:

Pretty nifty, eh? I feel that the information was a MUST to include to protect myself. And YES, everything is designed by yours truly. For those who don’t know, the “About” screen is something that is included in ANY software that you use. For example, on your internet browser right now, click on the help menu and then you will see something like “About Internet Explorer” or “About Mozilla Firefox”. Click on that and you will see a screen similar to the one that I have developed for Ciabranel D.A.T.A. software. On the tech support page, the email address, info@bloglorious.com works but the site is still under construction.

I am very excited to get started with the biz, but there are some legal kinks that I would like to work out before I start with customers. I have already identified several websites that I will definitely utilize for locating potential customers:

Hey readers! I would like to announce that at this very moment I am blogging from my new PC. It feels so great to finally have a computer that fits my needs! A lot has been going on, so I thought I’d write a post to summarize everything:

I had my 10th retight done yesterday. The next time I get my hair done, I’m going to have to travel 2 hours to get there (due to my upcoming move). For all of you constantly searching for Johadeni Nappi’s website, it is still under construction. As promised, I will continue to post their contact information (Address: 1638 9th St N, St Petersburg, FL 33704, Phone: (727) 823-9899).

Over the weekend, I travelled to Gainesville, FL (where I’ll be moving to) for the 3rd time searching for an apartment. Thankfully, this time was successful and I’ve located my future place of residence! Next step is coordinating the actual move for the first week of August.

I have more potential customers who are interested in my product. That means that I’m going to have to work at superspeed to get my business site, paperwork, pricing, etc. up and running. It’s going to be a LOT of work but I’m looking forward to it.

Sure I’ll be sad but I think that’s the best I can do for him right now. When I move to Gainesville, I need to focus on getting situated with everything.
I know it’s been a while since I actually posted an updated picture of my hair. Please bear with me and my camera phone as I still have not located my digital camera.

This pic was taken after a fresh wash. My last wash left my hair feeling extremely thirsty, so I decided to go spend a few bucks at my local natural food store. I ended up purchasing Thera Neem shampoo and I’m completely in love with it!

Thera Neem was initially recommended for me by my SL consultant because of my dry scalp. This shampoo has been specially formulated to clean gently, with no harsh chemicals, soaps, or synthetic waxy thickeners. It is Lauryl Sulfate free and Paraben free. Furtheremoe, it is very thin and runny so that it will penetrate completely to your scalp. Price: $12.95 for 12 fl. oz.

After washing my hair with Thera Neem, my hair was soft to the touch; it did not feel stripped dry like it did before with the V05. As you can see, my hair has grown a little (it does shrink up a little as it dries).

I admit that I usually go to a salon to have my hair washed (not necessarily my SL consultant all the time because she is located ~30 miles from where I live). Besides the fact that I don’t like washing my own hair, my consultant told me that I shouldn’t wash my hair too often because my hair is not “water friendly”. I’m not sure what she meant by that, but she did tell me that because of my hair type and because it is taking so long to lock up, that washing it too much could make the hair unravel or disturb the “process”.

Today I found that it was about that time for a wash because my scalp felt extra dirty. So I was about to wash my hair when I realized that I did not have any SL shampoo; I didn’t have any shampoo for that matter. Instead of asking to borrow my roommate’s shampoo (for the 2nd time), I decided to make a trip to my local CVS. My SL recommended that I use any clarifying shampoo if I couldn’t get my hands on the SL shampoo. I decided to purchase Alberto VO5 Herbal Escapes Kiwi Lime Squeeze Clarifying Shampoo and it was only $0.99! I was told to skip the conditioner until my locks were more mature so I didn’t bother with that. I lathered and rinsed my hair twice and my hair/scalp felt clean; however, upon closer inspection, there was a lot of white beads of residue all over. There wasn’t much I could do about it at the time because I was in a rush, but I noted that I wouldn’t be purchasing this shampoo again. I followed up by spraying my scalp lightly with Jamaican Mango & Lime No More Itch Gro Spray, recommended by my SL loctician for my itch/dry scalp. I also lightly oiled the scalp using the Jamaican Mango & Lime Island Oil. I finished off by lightly spraying my tips with Hawaiian Silky Detangling Conditioner (I like the way it defines my curlies ). After all of that, at this moment my hair feels very coarse and dry (very frustrating).

I’m not sure if using all of these products is good for my SL’s or not, but I know that somewhere along this journey I will find the best products for my hair type. Until then I’ll enjoy trying different things!

Lesson Learned: Don’t be afraid to try something new (as long as it doesn’t cause any chemical reactions). After all, It’s just hair!

6/25 - Should I Forget About It?: I couldn’t find the audio for this one so you can read below. My response: This woman will never forget about this. No matter how hard she tries to move on, there will be sonething that reminds her about it. If she is going to stay with him, she should make sure she trusts him 100% and going forward she shouldn’t bring up the past again.

Hello everybody! My son father and I have known each other since 1995 we had a baby in 2001. Well the girl that introduced me to my son's father was my best friend back then, but as we went through high school she and I grew further apart. Needless to say we aren't friends now and I actually can't stand the girl. To make a long story short, my son's father and my former friend were supposed to get married this August. Now how did that happen? Good question. Their mutual friend got married last year sometimes and then I guess they started kicking it (LOVE CONNECTION). My son father and I weren't together when they hooked up, however I feel that is dirty and trifling and I felt betrayed by my son's father because she was my friend. I think she probably liked him from jump. Be it as it may he claims he only slept with her 3 times but it was no good. The wedding is off. He claims he doesn't talk to her at all. I love my son's father and I know he loves me. We really want to be a family and move pass this, however I can't get pass the deceit (When I found out that he and the girl were kicking it, he denied it, but as the old addage goes, What you do in the dark will come out in the light). We enjoy being together but sometimes I can't help it and I just think about him and her being together. YUCK! EEW! It really grosses me out. My son father doesn't understand that he hurt me really bad, he could have been with any girl and it wouldn't have hurt this bad? How can I move pass this? Please help! Should I forget about it?

6/26 - It Takes a Village: This is definitely one of my pet peeves. I totally agree with Shirley’s response. I hate it that these days it seems like everyone is out for themselves and thinks that everyone else should “mind their own business”. It is a shame that people just cannot be grateful that someone else can genuinely have their best interest in mind!

I will be entering a 5-year doctoral program this fall to study Interdisciplinary Biomedical Sciences. My long term goal = researching and resolving health disparities among minorities (i.e. hyptertension, diabetes, sickle cell anemia, etc.). In addition to the Mcknight Doctoral Fellowship, I recently learned that I was nominated for the National Science Foundation Bridge to the Doctorate Award and I received it! I feel truly blessed and highly favored that money will not be an issue for me while I’m in school (it will be tough enough as it is). I will be moving to attend the university in a little over 1 month. Unfortunately, I am still in the process of finding a place to live once I get there, so I’ve been very busy as you can imagine. I had also wanted to use this blog to capture journey to attaining my Ph.D., so there will be plenty of updates.

6/13 – Who’s yo’ babe Daddy?: I agree with Steve. This family is entirely ignorant. No further comments.

6/16 – Ooooh, What A Web I’ve Woven: The man in this letter is absolutely disgusting. I pray that these adults don’t forget that the children must come first.

06/17 – Nice Guy With an Opportunity to be a Bad Boy: What’s up with all these ignorant letters anyway? All I have to say is that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

06/18 – Disgusted and Disappointed With Today’s Society: What a commendable woman for taking this innocent child under her wings. She needs to educate these girls about their history. She should also make sure that they possess a strong sense of pride so that they’ll be able to stand tall in the face of ignorant people.

06/19 – Should I try to Give up On Being Daddy’s Little Girl: I am so proud to say that I did not have a father like this. It is a shame that males (not MEN) can make children but then not stand up to be FATHERS. I personally don’t think this young lady should spend too much time on this sperm donor. She has a bright future ahead of her and I wish her the best of luck with her future endeavours.

You may have noticed in a number of my previous posts that I love curls. For the most part, around the time of my monthly re-tightening sessions, I also have a roller-set done. So far, the only method that has been done on my hair is setting with very small perm rods. I am usually happy with the results, but the curls don’t last that long on my hair and I would also want tighter curls. I’ve been researching other methods for a while, but I still haven’t decided the route I would like to take. So far, I’ve been thinking about Soft Spike Curlers and Wrap-A-Loc. Thanks to the likes of Brunsli and Goodnapps, I have been able to get good comparisons of both techniques…. I think I’m leaning toward Wrap-A-Loc for my hair length right now. As it grows longer, I might prefer a looser curl, maybe even Caruso, as BlaqKofi does so beautifully. I’ll be sure to post pics once I decide and also once I find my camera (I recently moved and have no clue where it might be ).

I’ve decided to start commenting on these Strawberry Letters when I can, just to give my $0.02. Well, there’s not too much I can say about this particular letter. I can’t lie and say that I can’t relate a little, because I actually can. But it’s pretty clear that this woman is in serious denial that the man she refers to is not HER man, lol. She needs to let the other woman have the leftovers and keep it moving.

I’m finally getting around to shopping for a new computer. The old one has got to go because it is definitely impeding my progress. Honestly though, I have been trying to hold off on this purchase because I don’t really have the funds for it right now. In addition, I have been awarded a McKnight Doctoral Fellowship to attend graduate school starting this fall. So there is a chance that I may be surprised with a new computer to go along with the fellowship (this happened to me a few years ago as a McNair Scholar during undergrad, but unfortunately I damaged the computer). I won’t find out about the possible surprise computer until I attend orientation for the fellowship program which is about a week away. In the meantime, I’m stuck hightailing it to the library or suffering with my time sucking, extra slow computer at home.

I know it’s been a while since I’ve written about the development of Ciabranel D.A.T.A., but believe me there has been a LOT going on. I don’t even know where to start. I’ve been working like crazy trying to bring everything together. A few days ago, I registered the new business with the State of Florida and I also applied for and received a Federal Tax ID #. Those steps were simple to complete, especially since there was no paperwork involved. But now I’m at the point of developing the company’s website and it has been a pain, especially since my computer is worthless. So far I made a banner (below). It takes me 5x the normal time to do something because my computer is so slow. I go to the library when I can to use a computer, but it’s not always opportune to do so because of scheduling between my job and caring for my puppy Chino. Purchasing a new computer is definitely on my task list, but it’s something that I will not be able to afford for a few months .

Last week I confirmed with my supervisor and other management at my job that Ciabranel D.A.T.A. will surely be added as a vendor for the company once my employment ceases. I was so overjoyed with the news that I was hyperventilating; it was almost unbelievable. I guess I thought I would’ve been harder to sell my services, but they were all very eager. In fact, they were trying to figure out a way to hire my company sooner. I was assured that there were plenty of researchers who could use the services that my company will offer: custom software development & infrastructure for data management, custom reports, technical support, and possibly website design (still need to finalize this list). I am ecstatic!

Yesterday I had my 8th retight at Johadeni Nappi in St. Petersburg, FL (Address: 1638 9th St N, St Petersburg, FL 33704, Phone:	(727) 823-9899). It seemed like this appointment would never arrive. Usually, I have my hair retightened every 6 weeks, but I think this appointment was scheduled out a little further than 6 weeks. I had so much new hair growth that my scalp felt very cluttered. This visit was unique in different ways. It was the first time since I’ve had my sisterlocks installed that I have noticed maturation and significant growth in my locks; I could really tell how far I had come. Also, this was my second to last visit at this beloved salon. I am moving out of Tampa Bay, FL in August so unfortunately I will have to find someone else to maintain my locks for me. To tell you the truth, I would like to learn how to do it myself (it’s definitely on my tasklist). During my visit, I inquired about my hair taking its time to lock up, and my loctician explained to me that it was due to my hair type (as I had thought). She said that I have two different hair types on my head: deep coil pattern in the middle & back (thus the spirals on my tips) and long curl pattern in the front (thus these locks tend to be more straight w/o spirals). To make a long story short, she said that coarse hair usually will lock up within ~6 months and I don’t have coarse hair (there is no “bad hair”/”good hair” in my vocabulary), so who knows when it’ll lock up. There is a process that locticians can due to “seal” the locks artificially, but I will not do that for two reasons: 1) I do not even want to know how much they would charge and 2) I want to enjoy seeing my hair evolve naturally.

Lesson Learned: Patience is a virtue.

Back in a previous post, I promised that I would explain why I had to shave off my hair twice. So here goes…. Well firstly, I’d like to clarify that in circles of napptural women, we use the words “Big Chop” (BC) which means clipping off all relaxed hair and leaving only the natural roots. A BC can be done several ways. One way is to transition by growing out natural roots while discontinuing the use of relaxers. The longer the transition period, the longer the natural roots will grow. I’ve heard of some women transitioning up to 2 years, keeping the hair in braids/wigs or “transition styles” such as flat-twists and braid-outs. Once it is decided that it is time, the BC is performed. Sometimes relaxed hair is cut off little by little during the transitioning period so that there is not a dramatic cutting of the hair in the end (for those of you who can’t see yourself being nearly bald). Some women bypass the whole transition period and cut off relaxed ends from the beginning, saving themselves the hassle of having to deal with two types of hair.

For my original BC, I decided to transition in 08/2003 and I had my relaxed ends cut about 3 months later. My decision to BC that quickly had to do with the fact that I had very little patience dealing with both the permed and natural hair on my head. My impatience = problems with the areas within my hair where the two textures met. This is called the line of demarcation, the weakest part of a hair strand with multiple textures that is a hot-spot for hair breakage (for more information on transitioning, see Transitioning How-To). Needless to say, once I was free of all permed ends I loved my hair of course. So my hair flourished and grew very quickly. I also think that doing the BC earlier on versus transitioning long term contributed to my hair growing quicker than it would have otherwise.

So everything was fine and dandy and then about a year and a few months later, I started getting an urge to see how long my hair would be if it were straight. Up until that time, I had not had my hair straightened at all. So I spoke with a few friends and searched the net about temporarily straightening the hair. Unfortunately for me, I did not to heed the warnings of my friends and the clear message of the article HEAT=DAMAGE. I decided to have my hair pressed at a local beauty salon. First she washed my hair, blow-dried it on an extremely hot setting (at that point, my hair was straight but very thick), then she went over the hair with a hot comb, and finally with a flat-iron and then bumped it with a hot-curling iron. When she was done, I felt like a celebrity. I could not believe that my hair so slick, shiny, and “shakeable” lol.

It was fun for about a week but I hated having to be careful not to get my hair wet in the shower and then having to spend upwards of an hour or more doing my hair before I stepped out for the day (had to make sure the curls were fresh everyday). After that week was up, I was looking forward to finally washing my hair and having my napps back in their full glory. The only problem is that the napps were no where to be found. I was confused because I thought that as soon as my hair was in contact with the slightest bit of water that it would “napp up”. But nevertheless I figured that maybe I needed to wash my hair again. So for the next few days I washed my hair at least once a day but to no avail. My hair was a MESS. It wasn’t the slick straight hair and it wasn’t my beloved napps either.

I knew that I needed to do something and I wasn’t quite ready to BC again, so I decided to have someone relax my hair for old times sake. For about a month, I had permed hair once again. It was cool and I received a lot of compliments, but it wasn’t for me. When it was about that time to get a touch-up, I couldn’t bear to do it to myself. So, I found someone to cut my hair off again, my 2nd BC. I have straightened my hair myself a few times since then, but I never experienced what I did back then. What that salon gave me is called a “hard press” and I am also convinced that the beautician put some type of chemical in my hair to release my napps as she was washing my hair (she denied it of course though). I did however lose a patch of hair in one corner in the back by pressing it myself (this was in late 2006/early 2007), so I stopped doing that altogether. All the hair has grown back beautifully thank God!

Lesson Learned: HEAT=DAMAGE!!!

A few weeks ago I had a brilliant idea to start a business. I’ll rewind to get you up to speed….

So I’ve been working as a research associate managing a breast cancer research study at a local research institution. Since I’ve been there I’ve picked up many skills and I’m glad that I decided to work after graduating with my BS rather than moving back home with my parents. I’ve always been interested in learning more about computer programming, which I had the opportunity to learn. No, it wasn’t part of my job description, but I felt that in order for me to perform my job most efficiently I needed a custom database/programming interface to manage all of the data that I was working with on a daily basis. So after ~6 months of finally getting everything to work as I saw it in my mind, I was very excited to show it to my managers at work. They were extremely impressed at the functionality and how user-friendly it was to use. My boss was so impressed that she asked me if I would leave a template of the program before I left (for graduate school) so that they can use it for other research studies as well. Initially I told her that it would be no problem, but then something eventually dawned on me.

I had a bright idea to start my own business providing support to companies who need to manage large sets of data. I’ve been working on my bright idea since then and I will initially operate under my father’s corporation, Ciabranel Enterprises, Inc. My subdivision will be called Ciabranel D.A.T.A. (Design and Technology Associates).

The great news today is that I spoke with my supervisor (not specific at all, but just enough so she understood where I was coming from) and she let me know that they would have no problem setting my company up as a vendor to provide services after I officially resign (since I won’t be able to do it as an employee). I am so excited!

Lesson Learned: Don’t let a good opportunity go to waste.

Hello readers! Thanks for visiting my blog. For all of you out there who are here to here all about my crown of glory, this post is especially for you. Come take you through a virtual tour of my hair through the years.

Childhood/Relaxed Hair/TWA/Wig

As you can clearly see, I have gone through many, many hairstyles. I began my undergraduate studies in 2003 and that’s when I decided that I no longer wanted to perm my hair. I could not stand running away from the rain, spending loads of money and TIME at the hairdresser just so that my hair would look flat/dull in just a few days (and long for the “fresh perm” look again in 4-6 weeks), and countless other reasons. I had always wondered what my natural hair looked/felt like and what was so bad about it that it needed to be covered up.

So I started researching and ended up finding nappturality.com. After visiting this site, I learned about how versatile my hair could be (despite being told that the only thing you could do with natural hair is wear dreads or go around wearing an afro 24/7). I was ecstatic! Soon, I did the Big Chop and started rocking sexy a TWA. It eventually grew out as you can see and YES, our hair does grow (especially without the Creamy Crack, lol). Occasionally, I would wear a wig over my natural hair when I wanted to change things up a little. But guess what? I was still HOT! I ended up shaving my hair off again in 2005 (I’ll explain some other time bc that’s a post in itself).

Sisterlock Beginnings

I always knew that the epitome of my napptural journey would be locking my hair. Once I discovered sisterlocks, it was a done deal. I had them put in September 2007 (it took 15 hours and they were done at Johadeni Nappi,Address: 1638 9th St N, St Petersburg, FL 33704,Phone:	(727) 823-9899). These are photos of me taken not too long after they were put in. The length of my hair is from about 2 years worth of growth. I have a roller set in each of these photos.
